Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)-Causes, Symptoms and Remedies
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition in the female in which the male sex hormone (androgen) is abnormally high. The elevated level of androgen disrupts the normal menstrual cycle in female resulting in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. In Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, there is the formation of small fluid-filled sacs growing inside the ovaries known as cysts. The follicles contain an immature egg which is unable to trigger ovulation.

Lack of ovulation alters the level of estrogen, progesterone, FSH, and LH. The level of estrogen and progesterone is low whereas the level of androgen is high. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) control ovulation. FSH stimulates the ovary to produce a follicle — a sac that contains an egg — and then LH triggers the ovary to release a mature egg.
In this condition, the cells may also develop insulin resistance, when cells can’t insulin properly then the body’s demand for insulin increases so to compensate pancreas makes more insulin. The increased amount of insulin triggers the ovaries to produce more male hormone It does not utilize the insulin properly that results in high blood sugar level which increases the chances of diabetes.
The exact cause of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is still unknown to the doctors, expect of the increase in the level of the male hormone that prevents the ovaries from producing hormones and making eggs normally.
According to the report by NCBI, “the familial aggregation of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome phenotypes and of associated metabolic and reproductive abnormalities has been long noted.” It has found that the disease could be inherited from mother or father.
2. Insulin resistance-
PCOS is often associated with profound insulin resistance as well as with defects in insulin secretion. These abnormalities, together with obesity, explain the substantially increased prevalence of glucose intolerance in PCOS.
In many studies, it has found that women with the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) are more likely to have elevated levels of CRP (C reactive protein) and also other other markers for inflammation like oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, and white blood cells called lymphocytes and monocytes. The excess inflammation causes the extra secretion of Androgen.

Apple cider vinegar-
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water, have first thing in the morning. You can slowly increase the frequency to 2-3 times a day. ACV has anti glycemic effect when ingested on a regular basis. The insulin levels in the body are regulated, and this can help control the symptoms of PCOS.
2-3 cups of green tea with honey daily. It contains a potent antioxidant- catechins. Catechins are responsible for bringing down the levels of the hormones that are causing ovarian cysts and related symptoms. Insulin levels are also brought under control by the green tea antioxidants.
Aloe vera Juice-
A glass of aloe vera juice every morning empty stomach. Aloe vera’s constituents have been shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels leading to restoring the ovarian steroid status. This positively impacts ovarian function and helps relieve PCOS symptoms.
1/2 teaspoon cumin in a glass of warm water twice a day, reduces blood sugar levels and also has antioxidant properties. These antioxidants can remove free radicals from the body and regulate body processes.
Honey and Cinnamon-
A teaspoon of cinnamon with a tablespoon of honey once a day, it is known to increase insulin sensitivity and boost calorie burning. It reduces lipid and cholesterol levels in the body.
It has the properties to regulate insulin and blood sugar levels. It also possesses a low glycemic index and boosts energy levels. Higher levels of insulin are common in PCOS patients.
Soak the fenugreek overnight or a minimum of 6-8 hours. Take a teaspoon of the soaked seeds with some honey and ingest it. Consume this every morning and then 5-10 minutes before lunch and dinner. Fenugreek is a potent remedy to reduce the effects of PCOS. This spice promotes glucose metabolism that in turn helps regulate the hormones in your body.

The cobra pose helps the pelvis and the back. It positively affects the ovaries and the uterus. It exerts a soothing pressure on the stomach and stretches the pelvis thus aiding digestion and blood circulation.
Marjaryasana and Bitilasana-
The Marjaryasana and Bitilasana postures relax the shoulder and the neck while massaging the abdomen and improving the reproductive organs. They are most effective in relieving ovarian pain.
It is also known as “moving the grinding wheel’, this posture helps in improving abdominal functions and exercises the uterus and reproductive organs. It helps to promote endocrine functions and hormonal secretions.
The Yoni Mudra is a hand gesture and symbolises the womb or the uterus. It is an excellent exercise to de-stress and to calm the mind and is very effective for PCOS when coupled with breathing exercises.
