An e-governance app UMANG launched by PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of the Global Conference Cyberspace on Thursday at an event in New Delhi. With the conference, PM Modi discussed the continuing future of Digital India and said, “Digital India is the world’s largest programe employing technology to help residents and improving service delivery.” Prime Minister — as an initiative to promote the Digital India program launched a one-in-all app called Umang. The app provides over 100 services of the center and state government on one single platform. The app offers a unified procedure where you can set up one request to avail multiple government services.

Umang basically stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance and is imagined to make e-governance. The application is already available for download from Google Play Store, Apple App store and also on Windows store for free. This e-governance application is developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and National e-Governance Division (NeGD) in order to drive Mobile Governance in India and also promote “Digital India program”.

According to a statement by the government, UMANG will be an umbrella app that will provide all pan India e-Gov services ranging from central to local government bodies and other citizen-centric services like Aadhaar and Digilocker from the central, state, local bodies, and agencies of government on app. Umang Apps also provides enables you to pay your bills, file income tax, book a gas cylinder, know about your Provident fund account or have Aadhaar related query, all these services available in a single app “Umang”.

The application is available on multiple channels like mobile program, web, IVR, and Text and can be reached through smartphones, feature devices, tablets and even desktops. The application form comes with a dedicated customer care from 8 AM to 8 PM every day.

The report states that 70 million of the 905 million smartphone users are from rural areas. The app was designed in such a way that it takes up minimum space on one’s phone. Most of these apps have been developed in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati and various other regional languages.

The Umang app provides a unified approach where you can install one application to avail multiple government services.

So how exactly does the Umang work?

The app can be downloaded from Play Store or App Store, you can also give a missed call to 97183-97183 or SMS to get the App download link on your number.

After installing the application you will need to create a profile by entering your name, age, phone number. Umang also enables you to link your Aadhaar number and various social media accounts with the application. After creating an Umang account, you can go to the services section on the software and sort, filtering through categories and services.  You can simply type in the name of the category of the service that you’re looking for and Umang will display the list of the related apps. For instance, if you type “Crop” Umang will list out apps like Agro advisory, Garden soil health card and so on.

“Apart from more than 150 government services, you can use #Umang for payment of various utility bills as well. Please download Umang and reveal your feedback with us,” notes Legislation & Justice, Information Technology Minister of India Ravi Shankar Prasad. At present, around 45 services are linked to Umang including services related to – Aadhaar credit card, AICTE, Bharat BillPay, Bharat Gas, CBSE, DigiSevak, EPFO, My Skillet NPS, Pay Income Tax plus much more.
