Now learn “Hinglish”: a hybrid language to be taught at the British college
‘Hinglish’ in India is somewhat a trend, learning the same is a reality. It may come as a surprise, but a reputed college in England has launched a one-of-its-kind course to formally teach the unique hybrid language. Hinglish is a hybrid of English and Hind language.

The growing use of Hinglish in films Jab We Met, and Jab Harry Met Sejal. The television shows, magazine headlines, and day-to-day talk has seen it being ever more described in media lessons, but Portsmouth School is the first ever to establish a course centered on it- Hinglish.
“We were quite surprised to receive the interest and caseload when we launched the pilot project. Its feedback means that we will offer a longer duration course to all students in the next academic year from September,” said James Watters, the head of the curriculum at the college.
Offered to high-achieving students at the A level (equal to India’s +2), the course was presented partly anticipated to India’s growing economic importance also to prepare United kingdom students who might take up careers in India or in Indian companies located in the UK.
Taught by Indian-origin teacher Viraj Shah, the course received enthusiastic feedback. A lot of the students planned to be on to colleges for degree lessons that add a year of position, with the likelihood of completing the entire year in India.
“It had been really interesting to find out about a fresh culture and exactly how businesses operate, especially in the technology industry. I’d like to go to India, especially Mumbai. I’ve never seen a Bollywood film however, many were recommended in the course,” said college student Evelyn Murray.
Watters said the theory was to own course, contained in the college’s modern business terminology and culture program, to raise knowing of Hinglish and exactly how it is employed in culture and business.
“The course’s focus was on culture and reference of headlines and statements in adverts, movies, and magazines. Students discovered some Hindi and practiced speaking during lesson time singularly, in pairs and since an organization,” Watters said.
Hinglish involves smooth code-switching between Hindi and British and is specific from the “Indian British” genre of writing, which identifies the initial Indian manner in which English is employed in literature, information discourse, and each day interactions.
The growing use of Hinglish has prompted linguists such as David Crystal to claim that it could even outnumber the amount of English-speaking people throughout the world as India’s effect increases on the global stage.
